Beatings on Westville Control Unit

Revolutionary Greetings!

On Friday, September 30, between 12:00 noon and 1:00 p.m., officers at the Westville Correctional Center were escorting a white prisoner to the medical room. It is alleged that the prisoner headbutted two officers. A officer by the name Davis picked up the offender and slammed him on his head while he was in handcuffs and shackles. The prisoner was butt-ass naked at the time. Two other officers then beat this prisoner repeatedly. He was repeatedly struck in the face and kicked in the head while he lay screaming and bleeding on the floor. Once the prisoner was restrained there was no need to continue to beat him.

As the voice of the voiceless here among the incarcerated in Indiana, I must not let these actions go unchallenged. What I saw reminded me of the Rodney King beating and what they did to George Floyd and countless others. They committed a crime on Sept. 30 and I am disturbed by what I saw. I can relate to being attacked by someone and acting in self-defense. Although it is being alleged that the prisoner headbutted two of the officers who were escorting him to medical, the prisoner was handcuffed and shackled so he couldn’t have been that much of a threat. I was recently advised that Sgt. Williams was among those who viciously kicked and beat this prisoner. The prison grapevine says he was put to sleep by one punch that knocked him out. So many of the beatings that take place on this unit are met with silence, due to it being void of video cameras in the areas where such incidents occur.

Several prisoner have been beaten so bad that they have filed federal lawsuits in the courts. Since I arrived here in May of last year, at least five prisoners have been beaten up by these same officers, who I had thought were professional and responsible men. What I saw them do to the white prisoner named Clifton Heath on Sept. 30 proved me wrong. The three officers involved in this had also beaten up this prisoner several months back. There is no doubt that these are criminal acts. I wish I had access to his family’s contact information so I could let them know the truth about how I saw them do to him.

I want to have this incident investigated as soon as posdible. Calls should be made to this facility, the Westville Correctional Unit, to Ms. Alverez and Ms. Mapps.

All power to the people!
